Special Educational Needs & Disabilities

All staff at Countess Wear understand that they are teachers of SEND and are committed to equality of opportunity and access to all areas of school life. We aim to promote inclusion by ensuring all lessons are accessible to all children taking into account physical and sensory needs, language needs, social and emotional needs and any information about prior attainment. On allocation of a place in our school, the needs of a child with disabilities will be carefully assessed and advice taken as to how we can best fulfil our commitment to inclusion.

At Countess Wear, we pay attention to the 4 principles of Inclusion:

• We welcome children of every race, gender, physical need or learning ability

• We set suitable learning challenges

• We respond to pupils' diverse learning needs

• We aim to overcome potential barriers to learning

The most recent OFSTED report in October 2022 noted that Leaders know pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), including those in the specially resourced provision for pupils with SEND (specially resourced provision), well. They have clear processes to identify these pupils’ needs. Pupils with the most complex needs are included in school life. For example, the school community uses sign language when singing in assemblies. Therefore pupils in the school’s special resource provision (Hearing Impairment Hub) are well supported to ensure that they can access learning in the mainstream classrooms.
